New City Chiropractic Center Honors Armed Forces Members During May, National Military Appreciation Month; Veterans Groups Support Chiropractic Care as Alternative to Addictive Opioids
In 1999 Senator John McCain introduced legislation to designate the month of May as National Military Appreciation Month. Both the Senate and House of Representatives adopted resolutions calling for Americans to recognize and honor U.S. Service Members during NMAM. NMAM honors the current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces including those who have died in the pursuit of freedom.
New City Chiropractic Center will be observing NMAM this year by providing free initial exams and a free first visit to any service member or veteran who begins treatment in the month of May. In addition, they will donate $25 to Rockland County’s Homes for Heroes in the name of each service member who begins treatment in May.
“My father was a World War II veteran as were many of my uncles. In addition, I have had the honor and pleasure of treating many active and retired members of the armed services over my 30 year career and have seen the powerful benefit this treatment can have on these heroes. This is a small gesture to say ‘thank you for your service’ to other current members of the military and veterans and thank you for keeping our country safe and strong,” states Dr. Michael Cocilovo, founder of New City Chiropractic Center which has been serving the county since 1986.
Usage of Chiropractic services has skyrocketed in the past decade as word has spread of its effectiveness. According to a 2015 study by the VA Connecticut Healthcare System, the annual number of patients seen in VA chiropractic clinics increased by 821 percent during the 11-year period of the study. Recently the Senate VA Committee held a hearing on pending health and benefits legislation and received support from numerous veteran’s service organizations. Several statements made by veteran’s groups clearly displayed that veterans are in desperate need of services offered by chiropractors. They also underscored that chiropractic care is tested, safe, cost-effective and produces better patient outcomes, especially as an alternative pain management therapy to powerful and dangerously addictive opioids. One patient of New City Chiropractic Center who can speak personally of the positive effect it has had on his life is Darrell Butler. Darrell is a 20 year Veteran of the US Army and the National Guard who most recently served in Afghanistan from 2012 through 2013. He is currently a resident of Orangetown.
“When I returned from my tour in Afghanistan, I was suffering from severe low back problems in addition to often debilitating migraine headaches. Before I began coming to New City Chiropractic Center, I was treated at various VA facilities where I was prescribed pain medications and was told I would need to have several discs in my spine fused. The prospect of that surgery convinced me to seek other options and I found the doctors at New City Chiropractic Center. They spent a great deal of time reviewing my medical records before developing a care management program for me. Their regular chiropractic treatments have virtually eliminated my migraines and I no longer require the back surgery that was proposed over three years ago. I recommend seeing them before considering any kind of surgery or taking powerful pain meds.”
The focus of New City Chiropractic Center has always been on wellness and resolving pain naturally. Dr. Michael Cocilovo, his partner Dr. Gil Rodriguez, and his staff, believe in educating patients so they can take an active role in improving their overall health care and enhance their quality of life. Many patients have turned to his office for care for years and even decades.
